NASA Loves New Zealand

Did you know that NASA loves New Zealand? I didn’t either until my keen software developer eye noticed some recurring background features in their images of the International Space Station.

Internaltional Space Station International Space Station

Yep, that’s right. In both the above images that little patch of green in background is New Zealand.  You’d have to say that the odds of the same country showing up twice in IIS images is fairly unlikely. Having the same part of that country appear, with the IIS in the same orientation is just amazing! :)

I realize I’m digging pretty deep here, but this is as close as New Zealand is ever going to get to being part of the space program…

Happy St Patricks Day

I hope everyone had a great day. St Patricks day is one of those days that has universal appeal with everyone, regardless of whether they are Irish or not. Kinda like Christmas :)

The Lost Art of the Haiku

Chroma_Haiku I’ve always loved haikus.  That’s why I was so stoked when I came across this collection of gems. The world would be a better place if we responded to questions with haikus all the time :)

Quoted from original post: Haikus for a Dangerous World

I just finished teaching my first class on 3-D cinematography. For the final, I gave the students the option to answer 2 extra credit questions. Here’s the second one.

“A velociraptor is coming at you on a hoverboard. In a haiku, describe how you will survive.”

Some selected responses:

Shit Christopher Lloyd!
Back in the DeLorean!
This sequel will suck!

I use sticky web
Like Spidy and Green Goblin.
Take down that raptor.

Screaming to trees,
I’m not that good of a treat.
I have many fleas.

I would climb high
above the sharp reptile beast
and kick its face in.

Calmly explain that
he is an anachronism.
Then watch him die.

If you’re anything like me, you’re now wondering what ‘anachronism’ means.
Here, let me Google that for you :)

Me On Twitter I always marvel at all the ways new content is being created for the web. A few days ago my boss twittered a picture with me in it.  I never would have known if CJ hadn’t told me :)

After a long and drawn out saga I finally have my Flickr account back.  I didn’t think losing access to my account had bothered me that much, but when I was finally able to log into my account again I was completely elated :)   In celebration I have uploaded a bunch of photos taken while Sarah and I were on honey moon, and I am looking forward to uploading a lot more in future!  Click on any of the images below to see a larger version, or you can see my full Flickr photostream here.

Law Put On Hold!

Earlier this week I blogged about the Internet Blackout Week NZ protest against a controversial new copyright law which was about to come into effect in New Zealand.  You can find the background to this post there.

gavel The law has been put on hold! Earlier this afternoon Prime Minister John Key announced that the controversial net Copyright Amendment Act is to be delayed until March 27th.  During this delay work will be done to try and draft a voluntary code of practice which addresses the concerns of the public. If by then a suitable solution cannot be found, then the law will be suspended.  If the law is implemented, then there will be a review held after six months to see how it is working out. (more…)

New Zealand's new Copyright Law presumes 'Guilt Upon Accusation' and will Cut Off Internet Connections without a trial. Join the black out protest against it!

I’m joining the protest against the Copyright Amendment Act which is coming into effect in New Zealand at the end of February.  Specifically I am concerned about ‘Section 92A’.  Long story short, this section says that ISP’s in NZ must have a system in place where by a user will be disconnected after three accusations of copyright infringement by a copyright holder. I found these videos on the net yesterday. Being a tech kind of guy, these scared the crap out of me!  Watch these, and then tell me that your cell phone isn’t dangerous.
