Christmas-Snoopy-Lights-Tree I’ve just finished my final day of work for the year, and this will be my final blog post until January. It’s a funny feeling to sit here and reflect on the 12 months, mainly because they’ve included several major changes for me.

A year ago:

  • I was just starting work at Outsmart, and was fresh out of university
  • I hadn’t moved out of home yet
  • I hadn’t started blogging :)
  • I had never participated in a 5 way Skype call across 4 different time zones, and
  • I didn’t even understand Web2.0

Solved – Data Point Alignment on a DateTimeAxis

chart I’ve been involved with several projects in the past where the Flex Charting components have been used to show information to the user.  However I have always struggled to get the DateTimeAxis in particular to behave correctly and have often had to resort to using a CategoryAxis instead in order to get a deliverable product.  A quick look around the blogsphere shows that I am not alone in this either.

image The third (and final?) beta of Flex Builder 3 has now been released.  Head on over to the Adobe Labs and check it out.

I hope they’ve sorted out the chrome issues in Vista  for this one.  Then I can really start to play :)

Bubble 2.0 – It’s definitely coming

I’m not old enough to remember the first dot com bubble, which makes me a little nervous about the possibility of a second one… I just don’t know what it would mean for me as a flex developer.

If you haven’t yet seen this video, then you’re missing out :)

Update 11/12/07: I should add that there really is no bubble in technology, and everyone should be investing in RIAs.

Update 19/12/07: The video is back online now :)

Congratulations Amber :)

235b_top_10_listAmber MacAuther was voted as the number one in AskMen.com’s Hottest Woman in Tech.

I regularly listen to Amber with Leo Laport on the Net@Nite podcast, and she’s a great proponent of Web2.0 sites and technologies!

[Note: The AskMen.com site doesn't work in Opera.  Shame on them...]

The Price of Being Famous :)

imagesTwo weeks ago I received a bill from my web host informing me that this  site had exceeded its monthly bandwidth allowance, and I now owed them $50.  $50 is as much as I pay for a whole year of hosting, so I phoned them up straight away to see what the story was.

As it turns out, my site used 5 GB of bandwidth last month when my limit is 2 GB.  Needless to say I was shocked that a site like this could use so much bandwidth, and I asked them to upgrade my plan to a higher limit straight away.  I decided I wouldn’t write any more posts until the upgrade was complete in an attempt to keep my traffic lower, but 2 weeks later they’re still having problems upgrading my account and I don’t know when it will finally go through.

This whole issue has make me start wondering about the possibility of selling advertising space on here.  Part of me feels some moral objection to putting advertising on here, but I started this blog both to contribute to the Flex community and also experiment with the SEO.  Maybe experimenting with advertising would be a natural next step? Especially since almost all of the Flex applications I build at work are paid for by advertising.  What do ya recon?
